Canadian Chamber delegation supports Kamloops resolutions

At their Annual General Meeting in Gatineau, Quebec, members of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce voted to accept four policy resolutions presented by the Kamloops Chamber of Commerce.

This approval means that the Canadian Chamber will now work to advocate to the federal government on issues raised by the Kamloops business community.  Last March, Kamloops members voted for changes to government policies intended to improve conditions for business and support a healthy and prosperous community.   This week, members of the Kamloops Chamber presented these resolutions to the Canadian assembly seeking national support.

The four 2010 Kamloops policies:

  1. Establishing Allowable Capital Loss on In-Kind Contributions.  The Canadian Chamber will now actively lobby for treating capital loss similarly to capital gains on in-kind contributions to RRSPs.
  2. First Nations Property Rights and Economic Prosperity.  This resolution provides support for optional private property ownership on reserve lands for those First Nations who choose to participate and encourages the federal government to work with First Nations to provide legislation and the framework to pursue this option.
  3. Acknowledgment of the Base Principles of Pension Reform.  This policy promotes a position where the government would seek a balanced approach between private and public pension legislation to ensure affordable and equitable access for all stakeholders.
  4. Elimination of Capital Gains tax.  Given the current fiscal environment, the Kamloops Chamber agreed to a modified position deferring the capital gains tax based on reinvestment periods.  Over time the Kamloops Chamber will continue to advocate for elimination of the Capital Gains tax.

“Kamloops’ success at the Canadian Chamber this past weekend speaks to the power of the collective voice and the opportunity for Chamber members to influence government policy for the betterment of community and business”, says Policy Chair, Leslie Brochu.  “We are proud to take on issues that our members have brought to us and to serve our members and community in this way.”
