About Me | Karen Sherwood

My love of beading began when, as a wee girl, I learned the art of beadwork from my Granny. I remember her teaching me how to make my first beads out of simple materials such as seeds and wall paper scraps. Through the years my knowledge and collection of beads grew. My love of beads and beadwork has been shared by my sisters, nephews, nieces and friends.

As we bead we share a mutual joy and admiration for the beauty and workmanship of 'the art of beads'. The art of Lampworking was introduced to us by my aunt who was enjoying creating beads for us. I learned this skill as well and began creating beautiful beads, designed to meet the personality and desires of specific individuals. This has challenged my creativity and brought me much joy. Lampworking

The art in making these glass beads also known as flameworking or torch working, is a type of glasswork that uses a gas fueled torch to melt tubes of clear and/or colored glass. Once in a mol ten state, the glass is formed using air and motion combined with tools. The art of making a glass bead is being able to blend colors, make uniform sizes and complex designs by melting glass rods over a mandrel. This involves constant movement, consistent heat, and precision timing.
